Should We Date?

If you like a guy and he likes you back you know it's eventually going to come time to decide... should we enter into a relationship? If you are interested in what a Christian Relationship would look like here are a few BIG questions to ask yourself before you take that next step!

1. Can you see this being a long term commitment?

God does not call us to commit ourselves to someone just for "fun." Plain and simple the purpose of dating is to find the person you are going to marry. Make a list of qualities you are looking for in a future husband, do those qualities align with what you see in this man? If not at all, then it's not worth it, having a boyfriend for the wrong reasons will only lead to heartbreak and emotional damage. It's a beautiful thing to save as much of yourself as possible for the man who you are meant to be with forever.

2. Have you prayed about it?

God may not give you the answer in flashing lights, but he does give us a peace (or lack of peace) that transcends what we can see with our own two eyes. Philippians 4:7 "And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Pray that God aligns your heart with his plan for you, so that you on are on the same page!

3. What do your loved ones think?

Even though it can be easy to discount those closest to us, they want the best for us so it's important to take their opinion into strong consideration. First of all if your parents say you are too young to date you should honor that, and maybe ask them to explain in more details their reasoning. I've experienced in my own life being "blinded by love," where there were big issues I didn't see in my past relationships that those closest to me did, and it's only for your benefit that you take those concerns seriously! It's such a blessing to have your friends and family support your relationship, if they don't you should strongly question why you are in it. Exodus 20:12 "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you."

4. Do you push each other towards God... or away from God?

No relationship is perfect and there is going to always be ups and downs, but OVERALL does this man/woman push you towards God, to have a deeper relationship with him, or away from God? Because the majority of our world is against God's word it's SO IMPORTANT that the person you are closest to desires the same relationship with God that you do.

Of course there may be more questions you want to consider before moving into a relationship, depending on your situation, but these are some of the big ones for me!

Thanks so much Betty!! That’s such a good point about it applying to friendships, we should definitely have those standards for who we surround ourselves with. Thanks for all your words of encouragement. <3
